The Rent Brigade

The Rent Brigade is a member-based organization that conducts community-based research and uses it strategically to inform organizing, advocacy, and policy campaigns aimed at winning material and structural change for tenants in Los Angeles.

“For good, planned, community housing available to the average citizen is not a ‘normal’ product of a capitalist society. It can be achieved, partially, only when there is an active demand on the part of workers and consumers which is strong enough to over-balance the weight of real estate and allied interests on the other side.”

Research

The Rent Brigade began during the Los Angeles wildfire crisis of 2025. Our research efforts uncovered more than ten thousand cases of rent gouging across the city of Los Angeles.

Since then, we have expanded our work to document the impact of ICE on our immigrant neighbors.

Our research is grounded in the fundamental belief that housing is a human right.
